Mathematics
At Mickle Trafford Village School, we teach maths to follow the National Curriculum. In order to support us in doing this, we follow the White Rose scheme of work which has been carefully mapped out for each year group. It offers the opportunity for children to revisit prior knowledge and to learn all key aspects of their year group's objectives.
In Reception, we teach maths with the goal of children achieving a good level of development in line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. To support the etaching of maths, staff utilse guidance from Development Matters, the White Rose scheme of work and the NCETM Mastering number programme.
We believe that children should:
- Experience a broad and inspiring maths curriculum
- Have continued access to high quality resources to support their learning
- Have a high aspiration of their mathematical abilities
- Feel confident within their maths lessons to answer and ask questions.
Learning in maths is practical and supported through discussion between children to deepen their understanding of maths. We use the mastery approach to maths to ensure that all children are taught effectively. Pupils are encouraged to discuss their problem solving in order to further their understanding. Active lessons are often planned to ensure children have a range of opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills.
Although we follow the White Rose progression documents, teachers plan and deliver lessons to suit to the needs of the children with a variety of different resources and active learning.
