Year 1 - 19.1.24
Date: 19th Jan 2024 @ 4:04pm
What a busy week we have had! Thank you for supporting the children to come into school prepared for the snow and the cold.
This week, we have been focusing on using a question mark! We thought of all the words that questions start with to help us out. We wrote questions to ask Mouse and to find out information about Fennec Foxes. In maths, we have been exploring numbers 11-20. We spoke about how these numbers are 10 more than numbers 1-10. We practised writing them out (with the 1 first to represent 10) followed by the 'ones' digit. We learned that these numbers are made of "10 and ____ ones".
Our shape work has seen the introduction of 3D shapes including cones, spheres, cubes, cuboids and cylinders. We have been discussing their attributes and their purpose in our environment.
In our geography work, we looked at the four countries of the United Kingdom and their flags. We came up with ways to remember their characteristics so we can easily identify each country's flag.
A change to spelling
This week I have assessed all the spelling of red tricky words for Year 1 matching their phonics and reading level. I will be marking and resetting words and groups ready to send home next Friday. There may be different groups depending on what your child needs to move their writing to the next level. Therefore, from next week your child’s spelling will be written on the bottom of their reading slip. There are no spellings this week but please take time to revisit any words from previous tests.
Reading books
Can I ask that all children have their books in school every Friday. It is really important that we can change their books in our Friday sessions, insert slips and mark spellings. It is difficult to follow up on other days due to planned lessons and staffing. We are also very conscious of not losing our new books from the RWI scheme. Thank you for your continued support.
Homework
Last week's homework was a two-week homework. Please see previous blog for details
Finally, we wish you a safe and happy weekend and look forward to seeing the children next week.
